Recycling asphalt pavement is an industry standard because of the proven sustainable benefits associated with it. The benefits include lower mixture cost (economic benefit), reduced energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions (environmental benefit), and conservation of natural resources (social benefit). Recently, there has been a significant increase in available recycling agents to assist with more cost effective use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and recycled asphalt shingles (RAS). There has also been research on how to effectively use recycling agents to improve performance or increase the amount of these recycled materials while producing asphalt mixtures that will provide the performance required by agencies and private owners. The balanced mix design method (BMD) is an excellent tool that many agencies are rapidly evaluating or implementing to optimize recycling agent selection and use. As with any mix design method or material change, it is important to consider what impacts the changes could have on asphalt mix designers, asphalt producers, and contractor operations. This webinar will address materials, mix design, and production and construction considerations that will help lead to successful use of recycling agents.
